Sources: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ruth_Simmons
Dr. Ruth Jean Simmons  is the 18th and current president of Brown University, the first black president of an Ivy League institution. Simmons was  also Brown's first female president  Simmons assumed office in fall of 2001. Simmons holds appointments as a professor in the Departments of Comparative Literature and Africana Studies.
Simmons was born on July 3, 1945 in  in Grapeland, Texas, the youngest of 12 children and daughter of a sharecropper. She earned her bachelor's degree from Dillard Universityy in New Orleans in 1967 and earned her master's and doctorate in Romance literature from Harvard University in 1970 and 1973, respectively.
Simmons first positions in academic administration were at the University of Southern California, starting in 1979 as assistant dean of graduate studies, and then as associate dean of graduate studies. She was a professor of Romance languages and became a dean at Princeton University from 1983 to 1990. She served as provost at  HBCU Spelman College  from 1990 to 1992.

Ruth Simmons became president of Brown in 2001. At Brown, she completed an ambitious $1.4 billion initiative - the largest in Brown's history - known as Boldly Brown: The Campaign for Academic Enrichment in order to enhance Brown’s academic programs. In 2005, President Simmons earned enough confidence in her leadership of Brown to motivate philanthropist and former Brown student Sidney E. Franj to make the largest aggregate monetary contribution to Brown in its entire history in the amount of $120 million. The Frank gift was principally devoted to scholarship assistance to Brown students and to Brown's programs in the sciences.

Basketball Wives (not the VH1 Show) lol….Business Savvy All-Star Basketballs Wives.

Basketball Wives (not the VH1 Show) lol….Business Savvy All-Star Basketball Wives.

Source:

I know that many people watch, Basketball Wives (even though most of them are not married lol.  But I just wanted to put the spotlight on a couple of Basketball wives, of both current and retired NBA players, that have scored big in the business world. There are many more women doing there thing, but for the sake of keeping the blog short, I just mentioned three.

#1) Cookie  Johnson- Wife of Retired NBA Legend Earvin “Magic” Johnson

Like many women with curvy bodies, she struggled to find a jean that had the right fit. She took matters into her own hands, launching CJ by Cookie Johnson, a premium jean enterprise that caterers to real women with curvy/full figures, in 2009. She brought in the best in the denim business: Michael Glasser,  the founder of 7 For All Mankind and Citizens of Humanity.  Johnson  made it onto Oprah’s Favorite Things list for 2009. The jeans are available in Nordstrom’s and Bloomingdale's department stores across the country.

#2) Kimberli Russell, Wife of Retired NBA Player, Byron Russell
Besides appearing on Basketball Wives, she is a personal fitness guru who specializes in group training and nutritional counseling. She started Faith N Fitness Mind, Body and Soul after becoming a mother and realizing she could share her fitness pointers. Russell has additional projects in the works, including several products released under the K Russ brand.

#3) Alani “Lala” Vasquez, Wife of  NBA Player Carmelo Anthony

She worked her way up from intern at an Atlanta radio station to MTV VJ, hosting shows such as Direct Effect and TRL—interviewing stars such as Jay-Z,  Sean “ Diddy” Combs” and many other stars—but her career changed gears after becoming a mom. In 2008, the Latina launched Krossover Productions in collaboration with her then-fiance, Denver Nugget Carmelo Anthony, film producer David Haines and actor Kevin Phillips.  Vasquez has two reality TV shows in the works with Krossover and is one of the executive producers of Tyson, which is the award-winning independent documentary on former weight champion Mike Tyson.

Signs that Your Relationship Might be Over....

Hey I know Valentine's Day was just a couple of days ago, but hey break-ups happen. Sometimes you are so in love with someone that you fail to see the signs. If you are in doubt, keep reading. These are signs that may help you determine if its time to throw in the towel.

1) Very little or no communication at all. A relationship can not prosper with no communication. People are not mind readers. Believe me, I know from experience.

2) When your partner shows no interest in having sex with you anymore. No matter if you put on your sexiest outfit, still no effect. If you can't remember the last time you were intimate with your significant other, thats a major problem.

3) Seems like he/she has lost interest. They used to call and text all the time. Just to check in to see how you are doing, whats going on with you.  Now you are the one contacting them all the time.  Chance are that they have lost interest in you.

4) You see your friends more than you significant other. ( Friends are great to have but if see them more than the person you are in a relationship with, that can spell trouble.

5) They suddenly have to work late, every night. Even  if the work often, if you partner starts working longer, later hours and has less time with you,  that might be a hint that they want their space.

6)They forget all the things that are important to you: (your birthday, anniversary, dinner dates, errands/ simple chores that they should be doing for your.)  We are not talking about occasional mishaps, we all can forget things once in a while.  We are talking about constant thoughtlessness.

7) All couples argue and disagree at times. But if you are constantly at each others throats, it may be time to throw in the towel. Fighting all the time is not a good look and it will result in a healthy relationship.

Let it go.

Hey it happens to all of us, but its best to move on. Play the field, it is other fish in the sea.

(1) Valentine's Day is suppose to symbolize love, not just for couples but for everyone.

(2) Valentine's Day has become commericalized. The sole purpose is to make money, not about love and relationships.

(3) Love should be shown 365 days a year, not just on Valentine's Day, sad that some only get appreciate on one day out of a whole year.

These tips will help you keep the holiday in perspective and will help to ensure you enjoy your day.

(1) Don't define yourself based on your relationship status. It is not your identity as a person

Have you taken these suggestions to heart. Hope so. But now you ask, well, what can I do to enjoy My Valentine's Day? Here are a few suggestions to consider:

  • Cheer someone up by giving.
  1. Send someone that has inspired you a heartful or homemade card to tell them how important they are to you.
  2. Take your child, niece, nephew or young cousin out to eat or for dessert. They will feel special and enjoy themselves. You will too.
  3. Send flowers, cards and.or candy to someone who had recently lost a spouse or has a spouse away in war. They need to know that others care about and love them.

  2. Send a card to an elderly relative you haven't seen in a while.

There are many other things that you can do, think about it...
Giving is truly better than receiving. You will not only make other people happy but you will feel great making them happy. V-DAY is not just for couples.

Black History Month Spotlight: Percy L. Julian (1899-1975)

Wanted to share a piece I wrote back in 2007 on Percy L. Julian, a great American Chemist.
Hope you enjoy and learn something from it.

African American have achieved and pioneered in many fields, including business, law, medical sciences and sports just to name a few. Percy Lavon Julian is just one example of African American achievement in the field of sciences which include chemistry, engineering, physics, astronomy and other physical sciences.  Percy Julian is known as American research and industrial chemist and a pioneer in the field of chemically synthesizing plant for medicinal drugs. During his life time, as with many other African Americans, he faced many personal and professional challenges. However, he became one of the most notable scientists, regardless of race, in the 20th century. His career spanned for four decades, making many valuable discoveries, received patents, 18 honorary degrees, and membership into the National Academy of Sciences, becoming the second black to do so.

Percy Lavon Julian was born on April 11th, 1899 in Montgomery, Alabama. He was the oldest of six children born to James Sumner Julian, a railway mail clerk, and Elizabeth Adams Julian, a schoolteacher.  His parents instilled education in all their children even though it was unheard of most African Americans attending school after 8th grade. After graduating from a small normal school for Blacks in his hometown, he entered DePauw University as a “subfreshman” in 1916.  The college accepted very few blacks at this time and the town was segregated. Therefore, he was not allowed to live in the dormitories and ended up living in an off campus boarding facility where he was refused meals to eat. Eventually, he took different odd end jobs and in return of his services, was allowed to sleep in the basement and eat. Even with all these adversities against him, he graduated in 4 years, in 1920, from DePauw Phi Beta Kappa and valedictorian.  He wanted to pursue his doctorate in chemistry but knew that would be difficult, and was denied access to those programs. He taught at Fisk University then in 1923 went to Harvard University for his M.S. However, they eventually withdrew his teaching assistantship and he was unable to complete is PhD there. He did received his PhD in 1931 from the University of Vienna

After returning to America, he taught at Howard University for one year, but due to allegations and scandals, he eventually resigned. It was at this time that he meets his wife Anna Roselle Johnson, married on December 24th, 1935 and had two children, Percy Jr. & Faith.  In 1932, he was invited to teach at his alma mater, DePauw. For the next four years, he carried on research in Minshall Laboratory that led to the successful synthesis of physostigmine, a drug which is used in the treatment of glaucoma. However, DePauw was unwilling to grant him a regular facility position. So in 1936, Julian became director of research for the Soya Products Division for the Glidden Company in Chicago, Illinois. For the next 17 years with Glidden, he would develop other products such as fire-fighting foam and perfecting methods for mass products of hormones including progesterone for miscarriages, testosterone and cortisone to treat rheumatoid arthritis, many from plants. In 1953, he formed his own company, Julian Laboratories Inc, headquartered in Franklin Park, Illinois with branches in Mexico and Guatemala. One of his major accomplishments was the commercial production of the arthritis drug, cortisone. He brought many African American & women chemists from Glidden with him. In 1961, he sold the company for $2.3 million dollars. The United States and Mexico branch was brought by Smith Kline and the chemical plant in Guatemala by Upjohn. The next year, he founded Julian Associates and Julian Research Institutes, which he managed and continued his research work until his death. In 1973, he was elected to the National Academy of Sciences for his scientific achievements, on the second black to do so.

Percy Julian died of liver cancer on April 19th, 1975 at St. Theresa’s Hospital in Waukegan, Illinois and buried in Elm Lawn Cemetery in Elmhurst, Illinois. He will forever be remembered as one of the greatest chemist of the 20th century. One of his greatest contributions was improving the status of Blacks, especially African American males in America, which serves as an inspiration to all African Americans as well as all races. He cleared racial hurdles and help to break the color barrier in chemistry. As well as a successful chemist, he was a successful businessman, becoming a millionaire. More then anything, he serves as a mentor and example for all those African Americans aspiring to work in the science field, namely chemistry as well as to young African Americans in general.

Black History Month, is it still significant?

Recently, I have talked to a lot of Black (African American) people regarding this issue and have came away with varied opinions. Some feel that they can no longer see the importance of Black History Month. Others feel that it should be celebrated all year long. Why is it celebrated in February, which is the shortest month? How do you feel about the issue.

Black History is American History.

I agree that people should learn about Black History all year long, not just in February. But I believe there is still a need for Black History Month. There are many children, black children that do no know their History. Of course, they know about Martin Luther King Jr.,  Malcolm X and Rosa Parks. However, when you mention the names of Ida B. Wells- Barnett, Dr. Charles Drew, Jan Matzeliger, Daniel Hale Williams and many more, they have no clue whom you are speaking of.

To quote Bob Marley: "If you know your history, then you would know where you coming from,"
" Too many of us make up our own reasons for why things happen without first gaining the knowledge."

Knowledge is definitely power.

How can you take pride in your race if you do not know where you came from? If you do not realize that many of the items that are in your daily life were  invented by blacks. Freedoms that you take for granted, prior generations fought and died for.

I hate this old expression:  “If you want to hide something from a Black person, put it in a book.”

However, all the info I just mentioned are in books. When is the last time you opened a book or research something about your history. It is time to wake up and not wait for someone else to tell you what you should already know.

My personal experience: In college I took and African American History Course 1865-Present. The professor was black. Out of 20 students, 6 were Black, 1 White and the rest were from various countries in Africa. It was disappointing that I was the only Black student with an A. let alone a grade higher than a D. The white student also had and A and got so bored with the course, that he only came for tests.

The African students could not understand why the Black American students knew little about their own history. Sometimes, it even baffled the professor how they knew about our history. I came out the class with a perfect grade. But I can't say the same about the others. I take my history and present very seriously,. This started from an early age. I also read books and studied about the less famous but equally important figures in our history because to me, Black History was just as important as what was taught as American History. They are both on in the same. I don't wait for anyone to tell me what I should already know myself

So, in my opinion, Black History Month is still significant. And it is just that, an opinion based on facts and experiences.
